How it works

  1. Number the courts. Court 1 is the top court.
  2. Play one game per round.
  3. Both winners move up one court; both losers move down one.
  4. On each court, a player who moved up partners with a player who moved down.
  5. Top-court winners and bottom-court losers stay put.

Players move individually, so partners change every round.

When to use it

Social ladders

Competitive enough to matter, social enough that everyone meets everyone.

Uneven skill

Strong players carry a new partner each round, which keeps games close.

Drop-in nights

Late arrivals join at the bottom without breaking the schedule.

Up & Down the River questions

How is it different from King of the Court?

Partners split every round instead of staying together as a team.

Who wins?
